91+ Beauty Affiliate Programs for Makeup and Beauty Bloggers

There’s ample opportunity to profit from beauty affiliate programs and it’s only going to get better with time. That’s because nearly 3.7 billion dollars worth of beauty products were sold online in 2015 and that number is slated to rise by 12% by 2020.

To help you get in on the profit party, I want to share a list of 91+ beauty affiliate programs across 8 categories so you can quickly find the products you use and love and share them as an affiliate.

If you’re brand new to affiliate marketing, you need to get approved to at least one affiliate program before you can call yourself an affiliate so this list will help you complete that easy, but important first step.

If you’re a seasoned blogger already approved to multiple beauty affiliate programs, I encourage you to go through the list to find a few new options that offer higher payouts or longer cookie lengths. They’ll come in handy as you get more creative with your affiliate experiments.

Since I share affiliate marketing strategies with awesome people like you, naturally my content may contain affiliate links for products I use and love. If you take action (i.e. subscribe, make a purchase) after clicking one of these links, I'll earn some coffee money ☕️ which I promise to drink while creating more helpful content like this.Affiliate Disclosure

Without further adieu, let’s go through the list.

  • How to Start Affiliate Marketing with No Money

This is a guest post by Jordan Alexo, a digital marketer who's been making money online since 2011. He specializes in self-publishing, content creation and teaching others how to do the same thing he does best! He inspires you on his website with strategies that have worked for him and product reviews that help you grow your online business.

Are you looking for a way to start affiliate marketing but don't have any money? You're in luck! This step-by-step tutorial will teach you how to start affiliate marketing with no money.

We will also recommend some affordable programs you can join to get started. So what are you waiting for? Let's get started!

    What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is online marketing where you promote other people's products or services in exchange for a commission.

It's a great way to earn money online, and it doesn't require you to have your own product or service.

You should see an affiliate marketer as the middleman between the customer and the product owner.

Your job is to find potential customers and then promote affiliate offers. If they end up buying something, you earn a commission! It's that simple.

Many content creators start an affiliate blog but that can be costly.

If you want to start affiliate marketing with no money, all you need is a free social media account to promote products and earn commissions!

    How Does Affiliate Marketing Work?

Affiliate marketing works by you promoting a product or service to your audience. You will earn a commission if someone clicks on your affiliate link and makes a purchase.

Commission rates vary depending on the company and niche, they are typically around 15% to 50% of the sale.

If you promote a $200 product and somebody clicks on your affiliate link and buys it, you would earn a $30-$100 commission! Not too shabby, right?

Why Is Affiliate Marketing A Good Business Model?

There are many reasons why you should start affiliate marketing. Here are just a few:

    Upside:

    • It's a great way to make money online without having your product or service.
    • You can start with little to no money.
    • It's a great way to supplement your income.
    • You can work from anywhere in the world.
    • You can be your own boss.
    • You have no limits to how much money you can make.
    • It's a great way to build an asset (your blog or YouTube channel) that you can sell later.

    Downside:

    • It takes time and effort to build an audience and start making sales. You need to be patient.
    • You may earn more selling your products, and it doesn't cost much to sell digital products.

You should see affiliate marketing as a long-term investment rather than a quick fix. It's not a “get rich quick” scheme. It usually takes six months to a year before you see results. Of course, you may make money online before.

But it's best to start with that mindset, so you're not disappointed later. However, if you stick with it, you can earn full-time from affiliate marketing! Some successful bloggers online have become millionaires from affiliate marketing.

So it is possible to make a lot of money with this business model!

5 Steps To Start Affiliate Marketing With No Money

Now that you know how to start affiliate marketing with no money, let's go over the 7 steps you need to take to get started:

    Step 1) Pick a Sub-Niche

When it comes to affiliate marketing, it's important to choose a niche that you can talk about long-term without getting bored. Ideally something you're really knowledgable in, or at least willing to learn all about.

A few examples of niches are:

Many of these niches are extremely profitable, and you will find a vast selection of products and services to promote. However, these larger niches are competitive. You can cut some of the competition by finding a sub-niche within these larger niches.

A sub-niche is a smaller, more specific niche within a broader niche. For example, within the health and fitness niche, you could have a sub-niche like “weight loss for women over 40.”

By targeting a smaller, more specific audience, you will have less competition and be able to make more sales.

You don't have to be locked into the sub-niche you initially pick. Let's say you make a few YouTube videos promoting diet programs for women over 40, and don't get any affiliate sales. You could switch your focus to a different sub-niche like “vegan weight loss” or “keto diet for beginners” to see what yields more success or interests you better.

The key is to start small and scale up as you start making sales. It's much easier to make sales in a smaller niche than in a large, competitive one.

Step 2) Find Good Affiliate Programs

You can promote both digital and physical programs and products as an affiliate.

A digital product is a product that can be delivered electronically, including e-books, video courses, and software. Whereas physical products would be anything needing to be shipped, from clothing to computers.

Digital products have a higher commission rate than physical products because the cost of producing them is lower. The commission rate for digital products can be between 20% and more than 75%.

Physical products have lower commission rates because the production costs are higher. The commission rate for physical products typically run between 5% and 20%.

Often physical products sell better compared to digital products. But you'll receive less money for each affiliate sale.

    3 Top Affiliate Networks

    amazon associates program

Amazon Associates: Amazon is the largest online retailer in the world. They sell everything from books and electronics to furniture and home decor. Amazon has a huge selection of products in every niche, making it easy to find something to promote.

The commission rate is low, between 1% to 20%. But because Amazon is such a trusted brand, people are likelier to buy from them. You also earn everything your visitor purchases in the 24-hour period after clicking your link, not just the item(s) you promoted.

    shareasale-program

ShareASale: Many companies have affiliate programs they manage through pro networks like ShareASale. The network boasts a huge marketplace of different top notch affiliate programs, including FreshBooks, Tea Collection and Grammarly.

Most affiliate programs have a monthly minimum before you can get paid, and with ShareASale you can pool your earnings from all your programs to give yourself a better chance of getting paid commissions every month.

    clickbank affiliate

Clickbank: Clickbank is an affiliate network that specializes in digital products. They have a huge selection of e-books, video courses, and software programs in every niche. The commission rate is between 30% to 70%.

Another alternative is to go directly to the company's website and see if they have an affiliate program. Many companies have their own affiliate programs that you can sign up for. See Brilliant Affiliate's list of 500+ affiliate programs for more.

Step 3) Choose A Platform To Promote

Now that you've chosen a niche and found some good affiliate programs, it's time to decide how you're going to promote the products.

If you want to start affiliate marketing with no money, here are my top free platform picks:

    1) YouTube Affiliate Marketing
One of the best ways to start affiliate marketing for free! YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world, and millions of people look for product reviews and How-To videos every day.

You can create videos reviewing products, give tips on using them, or even do unboxing videos. The key is to find a style that works for you and stick with it.

Be sure to include your affiliate link in your video descriptions and tell people to click the link to learn more.

People will watch your videos, and if they're interested in the product, they'll click on the link and be taken to the sales page. You'll earn a commission on any sales that you generate.

Consistency is key on YouTube. You need to upload videos regularly and build up a following of subscribers.

The more subscribers you have, the more views your videos will get and the more affiliate sales you'll make.

    2) Twitter Affiliate Marketing

Twitter is a great way to promote affiliate products. You can share links to your blog posts, YouTube videos, or product pages.

You can also share other people's content that interests your followers. The key is to engage with your followers and build up a rapport with them.

If they trust you, they will likely buy the recommended products.

Make sure to use relevant hashtags so that your tweets show up in searches. And don't forget to include a call-to-action in your tweets, telling people to click on the link.

    3) Facebook Affiliate Marketing
Another excellent platform for affiliate marketing is Facebook. You may build a fan page or group around a particular topic. On this page, you can provide your followers with relevant affiliate offers and content.

You can also join other people's relevant Facebook groups and engage in conversations. People are always looking for product recommendations.

If you have a great affiliate product, don't be afraid to share it. Just make sure the Facebook group allows it and you're not spamming the group with your links.

    4) Wix Blog Affiliate Marketing
If you want to create affiliate marketing posts without paying for a website, you can start a free website with Wix.

All you need to do is write helpful blog posts about topics related to the products you're promoting. Include affiliate links in your posts and tell people to click on them to learn more.

To further boost your content exposure, share your blog content on Facebook and Twitter.

You can also use platforms like Instagram and Pinterest to do affiliate marketing for free.

    Step 4) Find Money-Making Keywords

Blogging and YouTube videos are two of the best options for affiliate marketing. However, you also need to choose the right keywords. It isn't as hard as it seems!

    What Are Keywords?
Keywords are the words and phrases that people search for when they're looking for information. Using the right keywords in your blog posts or videos will help people find your content.

And if you can get your content to rank high in the search engines, you'll get a lot of organic traffic (people coming to your site without you having to do any extra marketing).

    How to Find Money-Making Keywords
You only need to think about three types of keywords for your videos or blog posts:

    1) How To [Videos or Posts]
These videos or posts are where you provide informational content to your audience. For example:

    • How To Put Up A Tent In The Rain Without Getting It Wet
    • How To Make Pancakes
    • How To Shoot A Basketball

This content helps you build your audience and establish yourself as an expert in your niche. You should always create relevant videos or posts around your affiliate products.

To find How-To keywords, simply type your main keyword into any keyword tool, and you'll see estimated search volume and a list of related keywords. You must analyze each keyword and see how much traffic it gets. Keyword tools can be pricey, but SEMrush offers a 7-day free trial or you can use Ubersuggest, which gives you 3 free daily searches.

You can also use YouTube to find how-to keywords for your videos. Just type How to [main keyword] or a variation into the search bar, and you'll see a list of related keywords.

    2) Reviews [Videos or Posts]

These videos or posts are where you provide your audience with an honest review of a product. For example:

    • Eureka Space Camp 4-Person Tent Review
    • Joan 12-Inch Polished Cast-Iron Skillet Review
    • Cosmic Unity 2 “A'ja Wilson” Review

When people are looking to buy a product, they want to know what other people think about it. That's why reviews are so popular.

To find keywords for your Review videos or posts, just type the product name into YouTube or Google followed by the word “review.”

For example, if you're promoting the Eureka Space Camp Tent, you would search for “Eureka Space Camp Tent review.”

This gives you an idea about what your competitors are doing with their videos and posts. You can see what you need to do to make your content better.

    3) Best [Videos or Posts]

People often want to know the best product in a particular category before purchasing. For example:

Imagine you have a channel to talk about weight loss for women over 40. You could make a video about “Best Diet Programs For Women Over 40” and discuss five or more popular diet programs for this demographic.

To find keywords for your Best videos or posts, just type the word “best” followed by the product name into YouTube or Google. See the videos or posts your competitors made to get an idea.

Step 5) Be Consistent And Keep Learning

If you want to make money through affiliate marketing, don't expect your first videos or blog posts to go “viral” and make you money.

It doesn't work like that. You must be consistent in your content creation and posting to build up your authority and following slowly but surely.

As they say, “Rome wasn't built in a day”. Anything worthwhile takes time.

The key is to focus on providing value daily and not getting discouraged if you don't see results immediately.

If you can stick with it and be consistent, you will eventually start seeing results from your affiliate marketing side hustle.

Keep pumping content out, and don't give up!

One final piece of advice is to keep learning about affiliate marketing. It's an ever-changing field, so you must stay on top of the latest trends and best practices.

I am a huge fan of high-quality online video courses. Some of them have completely changed my life. While many content creators are willing to give a lot of good info out for free, the best stuff (secret methods and life-changing tips) are usually saved for their paid products.

If you're serious about affiliate marketing and want to make money, I suggest eventually investing in a high-quality course. It will be worth every penny!

But I know how it is hard at the beginning when your budget is tight. There's also plenty of free resources and low-cost courses out there.

A great place to find inexpensive online courses is Udemy. You can find some impressive courses there for less than $20. Just type “affiliate marketing” into the Udemy search bar, and you'll find plenty of courses to choose from.

I hope this article helped you understand how to start affiliate marketing with no money.

As you can see, there are plenty of ways to get started without any upfront investment thanks to social media.

So what are you waiting for? Pick one of the methods above and start today! Who knows where it might lead you.

  • How to Make Money with Pinterest Affiliate Marketing

Did you know that you can use affiliate links on Pinterest and send people directly to products from a pin? It's true!

I get a lot of emails from folks asking if they can do affiliate marketing without a blog. And my answer is always the same: start an affiliate marketing blog because it'll greatly increase your chances of consistent and meaningful affiliate income.

But if you don't have a blog yet, Pinterest is a great way to get your feet wet with affiliate marketing. Especially if you're still figuring out what you want to blog about, who your audience is and how much time you have to devote to affiliate activities.

How to Make Money with Pinterest Affiliate Marketing

    Why Pinterest?

There was a time when Pinterest didn’t allow affiliate links (and there are still a few exceptions – sadly no Etsy affiliate links are allowed). But in 2016, Pinterest lifted the ban, allowing bloggers and social media influencers to share affiliate links with a wider audience.

You might be wondering why Pinterest is a valuable way to promote products as an affiliate. After all, your audience already clicks on affiliate links from your blog.

Yes, your regular audience is probably visiting your blog routinely. But Pinterest gives you a much wider reach than your loyal readers. Take XO Sarah's account for example, which has over 700,000 unique visitors each month on Pinterest. Although she has an amazing blog with tons of traffic, there's a good chance her Pinterest users don't all overlap, giving her a new audience to market to.

How to Make Money with Pinterest Affiliate Marketing

If you are only using affiliate links on your blog, someone has to first find their way to your site, click onto a certain post and THEN click on your affiliate link. With Pinterest, they only have to click on the pin to be directed to your affiliate link. Fewer steps equals more affiliate conversions.

The best part is that it’s super easy to promote and share your links on Pinterest, which I’ll go over with you step by step a little later on.

GETTING STARTED WITH AFFILIATE MARKETING ON PINTEREST

    Optimize Your Profile and Boards

Before we can think about creating pins and sharing your affiliate links, first let’s make sure people can actually find your account and see what you are pinning. This all starts with optimizing your Pinterest Profile and Boards.

Pinterest is essentially a search engine, so the use of keywords is essential. Start by including keywords in your name. For example, my account name includes the words “Affiliate Strategist” to help my target audience find me more easily.

How to Make Money with Pinterest Affiliate Marketing

Go ahead and also include keywords in your board descriptions to boost views. Check out this example of one of my board descriptions:

How to Make Money with Pinterest Affiliate Marketing

Lastly, add keywords in your pin descriptions (more on that in a moment!)

    Create Eye-Catching Pins

Pinterest is a very visual place. People choose which pins to click on based on their appearance so it’s really important that your pins stand out from others.

    What makes a great pin?

    • Click-Worthy Title – When people scroll through Pinterest they’re usually looking for something specific.  Make it clear that you have exactly what they are looking for (think 24 Easiest Christmas Cookie Recipes vs. 24 Cookie Recipes). Think about the font you use too – the text needs to be large and easy to read so that people can read without having to click on the pin to enlarge it.
    • Beautiful Images and GraphicsUsing the right images or graphics will help your pins look interesting AND stand out from the crowd. When you search for something on Pinterest you’re presented with a huge list of relevant pins, most of which offer the same answer or solution. Make your pins look professional, clear and one-step above all of the others!
    • Eye-Catching ColorsThe colors you choose to use are another way of making your pins appeal to your target audience. Aim to match the look of your own site, or in the case of affiliate pins, ensure the look of the pin matches the landing page of the product you’re sending people to.

There are lots of tools out there to create drool-worthy pins, including Adobe Photoshop, Canva and Picmonkey.

Some bloggers just pin affiliate product images and that’s an option you can try too. Just keep in mind conversion rates on those pins may be lower.

PRO TIP: Create multiple pins for each of your affiliate links using slightly different wording and layouts to increase your chances of clicks and traffic.

    Tailwind Social Media Tool

Supercharge your social media marketing! Find your best times to post and drive engagement. Tailwind is the social media scheduling tool that gets real results in less time.

    Examples of Pinterest Affiliate Marketing

I bet you’re wondering what affiliate marketing on Pinterest actually looks like in action. Here are some great examples from bloggers and business owners:

How to Make Money with Pinterest Affiliate Marketing

This is a pin from Natalie Hughes, a fashion blogger. It’s a clear, attractive photo of the item that she promoting and the link leads right through to where you can purchase the item using her affiliate link.

How to Make Money with Pinterest Affiliate Marketing

This pin from Seaside Sundays has a brief description on the pin itself and a clear call to action to “Shop Now”. The text tells you why you need this item in your life and the link leads you to the purchase page using their affiliate link.

How to Make Money with Pinterest Affiliate Marketing

This is an example of a pin that has been created by the merchant for their affiliates to use specifically to promote their product. The affiliate uses the pin created by the merchant but adds their own affiliate link as the URL when pinning to their Pinterest board.

How to Make Money with Pinterest Affiliate Marketing

Unlike the pins above, this pin doesn’t lead directly to the product. Instead, it leads through to a blog post that was written with the sole intention of promoting the affiliate product. The affiliate’s unique affiliate link is then weaved throughout the blog post.

How to Add Affiliate Pins to Pinterest

Once you design your beautiful pins, it’s time to add them to Pinterest with your affiliate links.

    Step One) Create Pin

Log in to your Pinterest account and select “Create Pin” from the menu in the top right-hand corner.

How to Make Money with Pinterest Affiliate Marketing

You will then be prompted to add your pin (upload the image from your computer), enter the URL that your pin will lead to and add a description.

How to Make Money with Pinterest Affiliate Marketing

In the URL box, paste your affiliate link.

Step Two) Write a Keyword-Rich Pin Description

Use the description section to explain to people who come across your pin what to expect when they click through, such as how the product or service can help them.

As I mentioned earlier, Pinterest acts as a search engine so keywords are essential to getting your pins found by your target audience. Your pin descriptions are no exception so remember to use lots of keywords relating to the product or topic featured in your pin.

Step Three) Include an affiliate disclosure!

As with any other method of affiliate marketing, it’s essential that you include a proper affiliate disclosure on Pinterest.

In order for your disclosure to be clear and obvious in accordance with FTC guidelines, you should include your usual affiliate disclosure blurb in the pin description. For example “this post contains affiliate links, which means I will earn a small commission at no additional cost to you should you click through and make a purchase.” To ensure there's no confusion about your disclosure compliance in the future, consider putting it at the beginning.

After writing your description, you will select “Done” and choose a board to save your new pin to. Congrats, you just created your first affiliate pin!

    USING TAILWIND FOR PINTEREST

Tailwind is a popular Pinterest scheduling tool and one that I absolutely love. It even works for Instagram affiliate marketing!

    Tailwind Social Media Tool

Supercharge your social media marketing! Find your best times to post and drive engagement. Tailwind is the social media scheduling tool that gets real results in less time.

One of my favourite things about Tailwind is that it automates Pinterest activity so you don’t have to be stuck on my computer or phone pinning all day to see an increase in traffic or affiliate sales.

Here’s how to get started with Tailwind:

    Step One) Create an Account

Head to the Tailwind homepage. If you don’t already have a Tailwind account, select “Signup with Pinterest”.

Make sure you are logged into the Pinterest account you want to link before moving on to the next step (you don’t want to link the wrong Pinterest profile to your Tailwind account!). You will be asked to authorize the app before going any further.

How to Make Money with Pinterest Affiliate Marketing

Next, you want to follow the on-screen prompts to get your Pinterest account connected to Tailwind and get everything set up (don’t worry, it’s nice and easy!)

    Step Two) Schedule Your Content

Luckily, scheduling pins is super simple using Tailwind. You can either upload your own pins or use the Tailwind Browser Extension to schedule posts from other websites.

When you set up your account, Tailwind will guide you through scheduling a demo post:

How to Make Money with Pinterest Affiliate Marketing

First, you will need to select which board you want to pin to. Once your Tailwind account has synched with your Pinterest account, you will see a full list of your Pinterest boards to choose from.

PRO TIP: You can schedule your pins to more than one board!

How to Make Money with Pinterest Affiliate Marketing

If you’re uploading a new pin into Tailwind, the description section will be blank so you’ll need to add your own keyword-rich description. If you use the Chrome Extension to save a pin from somewhere else online, there will probably already be a description – feel free to tweak it and make it your own.

How to Make Money with Pinterest Affiliate Marketing

This step will depend on where you have got the pin from.

    • If it’s a new pin that you are uploading straight into Tailwind, you’ll need to add the URL (for the purposes of this tutorial, that will be the affiliate link).
    • If you have saved the pin using the Tailwind Chrome Extension, the URL will populate but you'll want to swap it out for your affiliate link so you get credit for your referrals.

How to Make Money with Pinterest Affiliate Marketing

The final step is to add the pin to your schedule. If you select “Add to Queue” the pin will be added to the end of the queue that you have and scheduled to be posted at an optimal time. We’ll discuss Tailwind’s queuing system below in more detail.

How to Make Money with Pinterest Affiliate Marketing

    Step Three) Schedule Your Post

Tailwind will suggest optimal times for you to share content on Pinterest, or you can select your own times.

Select “Schedule” from the left-hand menu. Tailwind already has a list of times scheduled based on your audience. You can leave those as is or update them yourself. For example, Tailwind automatically added scheduling slots multiple times each day for my account but I usually pin more frequently, so I increased the number of time slots.

To do this, select “Generate New Smart Schedule” and input the number of times you’d like to pin each day (aim for 40-50). Tailwind will then generate a new schedule for you that will look something like this:

How to Make Money with Pinterest Affiliate Marketing

And that’s all there is to it! Easy, right?

    Using Tailwind Tribes

One of the most buzzed about features of Tailwind for Pinterest is tribes.

Tailwind Tribes makes finding and sharing content from other people super easy. And it's easy for others to find and share *your* content too!

Try this feature by selecting “Tribes” from the left-hand menu, then follow the on-screen prompts. Tailwind will then suggest some tribes for you to join based on your content, topics and niche. For most tribes, you will have to request to join and wait for approval but this usually happens very quickly.

From there, Tailwind gives you a whirlwind tour of how tribes work and where to find everything you need:

How to Make Money with Pinterest Affiliate Marketing

Once you create your pin and add it to a few of your boards and into your Tailwind Tribes (don’t forget to check the rules first!), your pin will keep getting repinned and discovered by more and more people.

To maximize your Pinterest affiliate marketing activities, try a combination of merchant’s pre-made pins and/or images, as well as pins you have created yourself. You can learn a ton and become a better affiliate by seeing which ones get the most repins, clicks and sales. Have fun!

  • How to Start an Affiliate Marketing Blog in 9 Simple Steps

If you want to make money online, starting an affiliate marketing blog is a great option.

When I first started blogging, I paid someone $200 to install my WordPress blog. Seemed like a great deal, until I realized it was a 2 minute job I could have easily done myself. 🤦‍♀️

I want to save you from making the same costly mistake I made all those years ago. It's actually super easy to set up your own affiliate website and build a blog you can earn affiliate income with.

How to Start an Affiliate Marketing Blog in 9 Simple Steps

Since I share affiliate marketing strategies with awesome people like you, naturally my content may contain affiliate links for products I use and love. If you take action (i.e. subscribe, make a purchase) after clicking one of these links, I'll earn some coffee money ☕️ which I promise to drink while creating more helpful content like this.Affiliate Disclosure

In this epic 5,000+ word guide, you’ll learn how to start a WordPress blog with Bluehost and make money with affiliate marketing.

I’m sharing every single step you need to take to get your very own affiliate blog up and running, including:

    What is Affiliate Marketing?

Before we dive head first into starting an affiliate marketing blog, let’s take a step back and explore what affiliate marketing actually is!

I define affiliate marketing as a partnership between a publisher (in this case, you!) and a merchant, also known as the affiliate company you want to work with.

You sign up to the merchant’s affiliate program and will be given unique links to promote their products. You will place your affiliate links in blog posts on your (soon to be launched) affiliate marketing blog.

Anytime you help this merchant generate sales through your site, you earn a commission. Commission earnings vary from program to program – some programs offer a percentage of sales made, while others give a flat rate or recurring monthly payments.

Affiliate Links - How it Works

Each affiliate program also has a different “cookie length” or “cookie window”. This means that your affiliate tracking links are valid for that particular length of time. For example, if a program has a “30 day cookie window”, you’ll earn commissions on any sales made within 30 days. If your reader purchases something on day 31, you won’t earn any commission unless they have clicked on your link again.

The cookie window refers to the time frame it takes for someone to click your link and make a purchase, not how long your links are valid in general – meaning you don’t need to update your link every 30 days.

Why You Need an Affiliate Marketing Blog

A question I get asked a lot is “why do I need an affiliate marketing blog?” As a blogger and business owner, for me it all comes down to ownership and longevity.

When you create a website using WordPress.org (as outlined in the step-by-step guide above), you own that website and have complete control over it. You aren’t going to wake up one morning to find it gone. Unlike a social media account, your affiliate marketing blog isn’t going to disappear because of a change in policy or social algorithm update, which means your affiliate income isn’t just going to disappear either.

Sure you can tweet about a product you love or share a post on Facebook that includes your affiliate link, but many people will be left wondering “why?”

    • Why they should listen to your recommendation?
    • Why do they need that product?
    • Why they would ever need to purchase it?
    • Why they should click on your link?

Writing long-form content to promote your affiliate links gives you the opportunity to really showcase what the product is, why your reader needs it and how it will help them. It allows you to build a relationship and trust with your audience. When your blog readers trust you, they are more likely to follow your recommendations by making a purchase through your affiliate link.

9 SIMPLE STEPS TO CREATING YOUR AFFILIATE MARKETING BLOG

    1. Pick an Affiliate Niche for Your Blog

If you’re serious about making money from your affiliate marketing blog, you need to pick an affiliate niche. Nowadays there’s just no way to stand out if you have 10 different categories about all your favorite things.

As with any type of blog, you want to establish yourself as an expert in a particular topic or field. This will help you build trust with your audience. When someone thinks of a topic, you want to be the first person they think of and the first website they visit.

So, how do you pick an affiliate niche that you are going to love AND that is going to be profitable?

First off, you need to think about your skills, your experiences and what you are known for professionally and/or personally. If you want to be successful with blogging and later monetizing your content as an affiliate, you should be writing about something you are passionate about.

Once you know these things you can start working through the 4-layer method for choosing a niche.

    1. Layer 1: First choose a general niche
      Example: Food blogger
    2. Layer 2: Next go one layer deeper into that food niche
      Example: Baking blogger
    3. Layer 3: Get even more specific in the sub-niche
Example: Minimalist baking blogger who focuses on recipes with less than 6 ingredients.
    4. Layer 4: For this layer, think of your audience to really solidify who you are going to be and serve.
Example: Minimalist baking blogger who helps moms become amazing bakers.

Whatever niche you choose, make sure that you are as specific as possible and really think about your ideal audience.

    2. Brainstorm & Choose a Blog Name

Once you have a niche, it’s time to brainstorm blog names so you can buy your domain.

There are two different routes you can go down when it comes to choosing a name – you can use your own name or something that reflects what you blog about.

The pros of using your own name (like I do with brilliantaffiliate.com) for your blog is that it’s unique to you and in case you decide to switch niches in the future, you don’t have to worry about changing the URL. However, your name doesn’t tell your audience what you write about and if you ever want to sell your blog as an asset, a personal name brand is difficult to sell.

Choosing a blog name that reflects what you write about, for example carefulcents.com or organiseandgrow.com, makes it obvious to people who come across your blog name what to expect from your website.

There are lots of online tools that can really help you when it comes to brainstorming a catchy and creative blog name.

    RhymeZone
RhymeZone is exactly what you think it is- it helps you find words that rhyme. So, if we stick with the example of the baker, you might search for words that rhyme with baker using RhymeZone.

How to Start an Affiliate Marketing Blog in 9 Simple Steps

    Thesaurus
If you’re not a fan of rhyming but you don’t want to use the same words that everyone else does, using an online thesaurus can be a great help. Maybe you were considering “the fantastic baker” but someone else had that name or you think “fantastic” is a bit boring. Use an online thesaurus to find some unique alternatives.

    Nameboy
Nameboy is an online tool that allows you to add keywords to their search and they generate blog name/URL ideas based on those words. The results are quite basic but it’s definitely a good starting point if you’re coming up blank!

    KnowEm
This is a really cool tool that you can put your domain idea in and see if it’s still available as a domain and across all social media sites. The results include social media channels as well as popular domain names too. This is my go-to site whenever I’m deciding on a new domain because there’s nothing more annoying than purchasing a website name, only to find out it’s taken on all of the social media platforms you want to be present on for that brand.

How to Start an Affiliate Marketing Blog in 9 Simple Steps

Whatever sort of blog name you decide on, remember that it needs to be easy for people to remember and not be too confusing as a URL – don’t make it long or have tons of dashes if possible.

    3. Buy Your Domain and Hosting

It’s time to launch your affiliate marketing blog! Here’s a step by step guide that will get you from “let’s do this!” to “I’ve got a website” in less than 20 minutes!

Note: I recommend using Bluehost to create a self-hosted WordPress blog. I use several hosting companies and domain registrars for my sites, but Bluehost is my go-to at the moment.

They're perfect for new bloggers because they give you a free domain when you create your account and offer very affordable and reliable hosting packages. Therefore the tutorial below is based on purchasing your domain and hosting through Bluehost.

How to Start an Affiliate Marketing Blog in 9 Simple Steps

The reason I choose WordPress for all my blogs is because I have much more control over every element of my sites than if I’d used WordPress.com or Squarespace. Self-hosted WordPress allows you to install plugins that improve the functionality of your site, pick themes that you can customize and maintain full ownership.

    A) Create an account with Bluehost

Head over to Bluehost and select “Get started now”. On the next page you will see the different hosting packages that Bluehost offers.

How to Start an Affiliate Marketing Blog in 9 Simple Steps

As you can see, all of the packages include a domain name.

Select the package that you want. I recommend the plus package because you’ll want unlimited website space, email storage and unmetered performance long-term. storage and.

After selecting the package, you will be taken to the stage where you can register your domain name.

How to Start an Affiliate Marketing Blog in 9 Simple Steps

As you can see, you have the opportunity to register a new domain name for free with Bluehost or, sign up using an existing domain name that you have purchased through a different site.

Add your chosen domain name into the box on the left-hand side and Bluehost will let you know if the domain is available. If it isn’t available, Bluehost will show you a list of alternatives to help you choose something else.

    B) Choose the length of your hosting package and select add-ons

After selecting your domain name, you will be directed to a page where you create your account. Bluehost will automatically assume that you want to sign up for 3 years which will give you the cheapest per-month price but you can change this if you want.

How to Start an Affiliate Marketing Blog in 9 Simple Steps

I know that purchasing your hosting for three years upfront can seem like a big investment, but blogging and earning with affiliate marketing doesn’t yield overnight success, so it’s worth it if you’re in this for the long haul. It could actually be the push you need to make your blog a priority!

That said, there’s nothing wrong with trying it out for 1 year to test the waters out. Just be sure to set a reminder or put the site on auto-renew so you don’t lose the domain later. On this page you will also see optional extras to add to your hosting package. I would always recommend adding the Domain Privacy Protection as this keeps your personal information safe.

    C) Complete your transaction to get your site!

One final step…once you select your hosting period and any add-ons, input your payment information and hit “Submit”. Congrats! You now own a domain with hosting thanks to Bluehost. Now the fun begins…

    4. Choose Your Blog Theme

I’ll be honest with you here – you’ll probably never find the perfect theme!

You could spend days on end searching for WordPress themes and weigh the pros and cons of each. The important thing to remember when it comes to making money from your affiliate marketing blog is that your content is key. Your blog posts that will be converting readers into affiliate sales.

However, having a clean and professional looking website will help you get approved to more affiliate programs and will also encourage your readers to stay on your site longer (and read more of your incredible blog posts!)

Before you start looking at themes and getting distracted by all of the fancy, beautiful possibilities out there, make a list of things that you definitely want your blog to have. For example:

    • Do you want a 3-column blog with two sidebars?
    • Do you want to have an e-commerce store?
    • Does your email opt-in box need to be above the fold on every page?

Once you have a list of features and functions that you want your blog to have, you can look for a theme that caters to those.

To give you some inspiration, here are a few of my favorite places to get WordPress themes.

Theme Note: Some of the themes I recommend are built with The Genesis Framework, which is search engine optimized and enables you to deliver a sleek, professional and responsive website without needing to know how to code. When you purchase a Genesis theme, there is an extra (simple) step for installation that I’ll cover later in this guide. Learn more with this Genesis Guide for Absolute Beginners.

    5. Install WordPress & Your Theme

Installing WordPress is really easy with Bluehost (and as I mentioned earlier, WordPress is free!).

Log into your Bluehost account and select “hosting” from the menu, then “website” from the submenu.

How to Start an Affiliate Marketing Blog in 9 Simple Steps

Click the “Install now” link and then select your domain name to install WordPress on it and press “Next”.

How to Start an Affiliate Marketing Blog in 9 Simple Steps

Set your username and password and you’re good to go!

It is recommended that you install an SSL certificate on your site to increase security, especially if you are going to accept payments through your site at some point in the future. From your Bluehost account dashboard, select “advanced” and scroll down to the “security” section.

Select “SSL/TLS” and “Install and Manage SSL for your site (HTTPS)”. Here you can select your domain from the list (if you only have one domain, it will be the only one there) and hit “Install”.

Once you’ve completed all the steps, you can hit “Install Now” and everything will magically happen for you!

You will be emailed a link to your sign in page for WordPress (usually your URL.com/wp-admin). When you first log in to your WordPress dashboard, take a bit of time to look around and get familiar with everything.

How to Start an Affiliate Marketing Blog in 9 Simple Steps

Once you’ve done that, it’s time to install that beautiful theme you purchased!

You will see a menu on the left-hand side of your dashboard. Scroll down to the “Appearance” section and select “Themes”. At the top of the screen you will see a button called “Add New” – this is where you can upload your new theme.

How to Start an Affiliate Marketing Blog in 9 Simple Steps

Add your chosen file, hit install now. WordPress will work its magic and then all you need to do is hit “Activate” once the theme is installed.

Genesis Framework note: If you are using a Genesis theme, you will need to install the Genesis theme file before installing your theme. Go to “Appearance” and “Themes”, click “Add New” and then upload the Genesis Framework file from your desktop. Click “Install” but don’t press “activate”. Instead, return to the “Themes” page and install your theme .zip folder as outlined above.

    6. Customize Your Theme and Bring Your Site to Life

    THEME CUSTOMIZATIONS

Setting up and customizing a new theme is something I find super exciting! There’s something magical about going from a blank website to one that looks like a beautiful, professional website people are going to LOVE reading.

If there’s one thing that an affiliate marketing blog needs for success, it’s readers! So, when it comes to setting up and customizing your theme, you need to keep your ideal reader in mind and design a site that it appeals directly to them (don’t be tempted to just create a site that you love!)

Now that your theme is installed and activated, you can start making changes to things like your hero section, background, and colors and fonts used across your site.

To get started, select the “Appearance” link from your dashboard, then “Customize”. Depending on the theme you have chosen, your customization screen may look a little different to this and have different options based on what customizations are possible with your chosen theme.

How to Start an Affiliate Marketing Blog in 9 Simple Steps

These are the main sections that you may want to customize:

    • Typography – This is where you can choose the font styles and colors that appear across your site. Most themes will allow you to create different settings for paragraph text, Headings and links.
    • Site identity – This is where you can add your logo, hero section and favicon
Colors – Choose which colors you want to see in different parts of your website. Maybe you want any buttons on your site to be a certain color or hyperlinks to show up in another color so that they stand out from the rest of your text?
    • Background – If you want your website to have a specific background color or image, this is where you can set that.
    • Menus – In this section you can set up the menus that your website visitors see on your site. I would recommend keeping your navigation menu simple and easy to navigate by only including a few main pages e.g. about, blog and contact pages.
    • Homepage settings – On your website you can choose to display your latest blog posts or have a static page. This decision is entirely up to you but is something that you can change if you change your mind further down the line.

I would recommend clicking into each section in turn and exploring the settings that you can change and customize. Don’t feel like you have to make changes to everything!

    WORDPRESS PLUGINS

Besides customizing your theme, you can also make changes to your blog using plugins. I think to think of WordPress plugins as third-party apps that add new features to your site.

You can see which plugins come with your site by clicking the Plugins button (right under Appearance) on your WordPress menu along the left-hand side of your dashboard.

How to Start an Affiliate Marketing Blog in 9 Simple Steps

Here are my favorite WordPress plugins:

    Top Pick
    Get Lasso

The all-in-one affiliate marketing plugin for Wordpress. Create beautiful displays. Manage your affiliate links. Boost your Amazon earnings.

    Free 7-Day Trial
I use an affiliate link for Lasso, which means I will earn a commission if you buy it, at no additional cost to you. Thanks for supporting my site in this way!

Pretty Links – A free link management plugin. I've since upgraded to Lasso since it offers way more features, such as the beautiful displays above.

Tasty Links – The fine folks at Food Blogger Pro created this premium plugin specifically for affiliate marketing. Use it to change any word on your site into an affiliate link, plus add an affiliate disclosure to your blog posts.

Yoast SEO – This SEO plugin boasts great free features – like meta titles and descriptions for your blog posts – but you can also level up big time with the paid version.

Fathom Analytics – A privacy focused website analytics platform that comes with a WordPress plugin to make getting started super easy.

How to Start an Affiliate Marketing Blog in 9 Simple Steps

Google Analytics Dashboard – Use this plugin to see your blog traffic from Google Analytics while viewing your WordPress dashboard.

ConvertKit – Get your blog visitors to sign up for your newsletter while on any post with the WordPress plugin ConvertKit offers customers.

Leadpages – If you use Leadpages for landing pages, their Leadpages Connector plugin makes it easy for you to integrate their pages on your site with your own URL.

Side note: if you’d rather not pay a recurring subscription for your landing pages, check out these pretty landing page templates by Bluchic.

How to Start an Affiliate Marketing Blog in 9 Simple Steps

Redirection – This plugin helps you redirect old links safely to avoid SEO problems in the future.

Duplicate Post – This plugin allows you to create a copy of another blog post – very handy if you have templates for your blog content.

    BRING YOUR SITE TO LIFE

In the upcoming steps, you’ll learn how to brand your site and launch your first affiliate blog post. But first, I encourage you to bring your site to life by doing the following:

    Publish your about page

    • Go to Pages > Add New and title the page /about
    • Write a little bit about yourself and why you created the blog
    • Include a photo and links to social media profiles!
    • When you’re done, hit publish

    Create your site’s menu

    • Go to Appearance > Menus
    • Drag your pages and hit save so your pages are displayed on the site

    Update your settings

    • Go to Settings and explore each sub-menu to finish customizing your site
    • General >> Always update your tagline – you don’t want to be yet another site on the internet with the tagline “just another WordPress blog”
    • Writing >> You can use the classic editor if you’re more comfortable with it than the block editor
    • Reading >> If you’d like the blog to be your homepage (instead of having a homepage about your business, you can choose that here.
    • Permalinks >> I recommend choosing post name instead of the plan default.

In the section above, I mentioned adding a logo, hero image and favicon to your website.

If you want your readers to trust you and to click through your affiliate links to make purchases, your website needs to look polished and professional. You want people to think that your site is established and reputable (which it will be!).

When it comes to branding for your affiliate marketing blog, there are two options – you can DIY it, or you can hire a professional to do. It really all comes down to your budget.

Starting a profitable blog does not have to be expensive, even if you decide to outsource it. You only need a few things to create a cohesive look, such as a logo, blog post templates, and a color palette.

    DIY
A lot of successful bloggers DIY first and then invest in professional design services later. When it comes to DIY’ing your logo and other branded elements, nothing is easier to use than Canva. Canva is a free online tool (with a pro version available for $10 per month) that makes designing things super fun and easy. There are a whole range of templates available for you to use including blog headers, logos, Pinterest templates and so much more!

If you’re not digging the free templates, consider these Canva Social Media Templates – which come with 10 free stunning stock photos – offered by Bluchic.

How to Start an Affiliate Marketing Blog in 9 Simple Steps

At a very minimum you will need a logo, a header for your blog, a favicon (the little icon that shows up on the internet browser) and a Pin template. Pinterest plays a huge role in driving traffic to your website and, by having a template to use for each blog post you create, you can save yourself a TON of time in the long run.

A few key things to remember when it comes to your branding elements:

    • Use the same colors and fonts throughout
    • Make sure that they aren’t too complex as they won’t display well on mobile
    • Keep your target audience in mind at all times – will this appeal to them?

If you’re more tech savvy, you might want to create these things in Photoshop or Illustrator.

    HIRING A PRO
Working with a professional is a great option if you don’t have an eye for design and/or are strapped for time.

Here are a few marketplaces you can use to hire designers and find pre-made professional templates:

If you’d rather look for your own designer, research is key. Don’t be tempted to simply hire the first or cheapest person you find! Take your time to ask around in blogging Facebook Groups, or if you see a blog with branding that you love, drop them a message (or check their blog footer) to find out who created it.

Make sure you explore their portfolio of previous work, and double-check what their process is and what is included in each package they offer. Any great designer will spend time answering your questions and discussing exactly what you are looking for so don’t panic if you’re a bit uncertain about your vision!

    8. Brainstorm affiliate content ideas

Okay, so now you have a niche, a blog name, a domain name, a WordPress site with gorgeous theme installed and customized and your branding elements are in hand.

The next step is to get started with creating content! Here’s how to brainstorm affiliate content ideas:

    A) Set aside all distractions, like phones, TV, emails etc.

    B) Set a timer on your phone and don’t stop scribbling ideas down until the timer ends

    C) You can generate topic ideas by asking questions such as:

    • What tools do I use regularly? i.e. electric mixer, piping bags etc.
    • How did I get started in this niche? i.e. story of when you first baked a cake
    • What are common mistakes I see in my industry? i.e. people using the wrong type of flour

    D) With each topic you come up with, think of 3-4 blog post ideas.

For example, if you wrote down “Electric Mixer” as a tool you use, you could write the following posts:

    • Top 5 Electric Mixers for the Modern Kitchen
    • Why I Choose to Use an Electric Mixer for Baking Scones
    • 3 Surprising Uses for an Electric Mixer
    • 6 Reasons Why Every Kitchen Should Have an Electric Mixer

For more details on how to brainstorm original blog post ideas, check out this insanely helpful post from Elle & Co.: How to Come Up With 60 Original Blog Post Ideas in 30 Minutes.

To ensure you monetize your new blog from day one, narrow down your list of content ideas based on which could feature affiliate products. Once you have a list of those products, you can start looking into relevant affiliate programs to join.

Affiliate tip: You should have a couple of blog posts live before applying to affiliate programs, so keep the first couple of posts more generic like a listicle (I.e. don’t write a review of a product you want to be an affiliate for since they could reject you and then it’ll be a waste) that you can add affiliate links to once you’ve been approved to the programs.

    9. Outline, Write and Publish Your First Post

Let’s get started with the actual content creation!

The best way to get your first post out there is to create a simple but fun listicle. For example, if you’re a cake baking blog, you might create a list of the best electric mixers or your favorite baking books.

Start by writing an outline of your blog post in a Google doc.Your outline should include the headers you will use, the keywords you will use throughout and some title ideas vetted by Co-Schedule’s Headline Analyzer.

Once you are happy with the outline, start fleshing out all of the different sections and paragraphs. Remember to keep things concise, show your personality and ALWAYS keep your readers in mind.

I always like to step away from my finished blog posts for at least a couple of hours before coming back to proofread and edit them.

When you are happy with the finished post, it’s time to add it to your WordPress site. Log in to your WordPress dashboard and select “Posts” from the menu sidebar. Hit “Add New” and add your content!

How to Start an Affiliate Marketing Blog in 9 Simple Steps

You will see a box to enter your blog post title and then add your main content below that. With the new Guttenberg setting in WordPress, you can now add blocks. Click on the “+” icon and add a text box or, where needed, an image box or HTML box.

How to Start an Affiliate Marketing Blog in 9 Simple Steps

Once you have added your branded images, tags and categories, it’s time to hit publish!

Now sit back and enjoy the victory of having just published your first ever blog post on your new affiliate marketing blog!

Your affiliate marketing blog is live, now what?

Once you have a few blog posts live on your site, it’s time to apply to affiliate programs in your niche. If you’re not sure where to get started, check out my list of 503+ affiliate programs for bloggers.

Keep in mind, every affiliate application experience is different:

    • Affiliate platform >> The application process may be faster if the program is on a pro network like ShareASale, versus if you're signing up to an independent platform.
    • Affiliate manager >> The application process may be smoother if the affiliate manager is experienced and dedicated to the program's wellbeing full-time.

Once you're approved to a new program, grab your unique affiliate link and add it into any blog posts you have up on your site.

From there, your road to affiliate success is two-fold:

    Create more content.

While you can make money off a couple of blog posts, create consistent content and implement SEO strategies to get more readers to your site.

You want to enjoy blogging and the process of monetizing so don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Simply come up with a content creation schedule that’s doable for you – like one post a week or two posts a month.

Get the word out about your blog.

After all, there’s no point in having amazing content with your affiliate links if no one is visiting your site.

SEO traffic can take several months to kick in so while you wait, try sharing your content on social media or swapping links with bloggers in your industry.
